Abstract

Based on his experience and observations, the presenter explains how to be successful in graduate studies at foreign universities. The presentation covers three important aspects of graduate studies: graduate courses, thesis research and publications, and careers after graduation. Typical requirements of graduate courses are discussed. The ability to conduct original research and to prepare and publish papers in refereed journals is an essential component for a successful career in academia. The attributes of a good paper and the process of conducting original research are explained. Important aspects of the paper writing process including how to structure and organize a paper and the journal submission process are covered. Moreover, the paper revision process in response to the editorial decisions and comments by reviewers is presented. Finally, typical functions and expectations of a faculty member are discussed.  

Brief Biographical Sketch

Dr. Liping Fang is Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Associate Dean, Undergraduate Programs and Student Affairs, Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science, at Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. He served as Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Ryerson from July 2004 to June 2012. He is Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC), and Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME) as well as a registered Professional Engineer in Ontario. He received his BEng degree from Tianjin University, China, and MASc and PhD degrees from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Canada.

方黎平博士是加拿大瑞尔森大学(Ryerson University)机械和工业工程系教授。现任瑞尔森大学工程和建筑学院副院长，2004年7月至2012年6月担任瑞尔森大学机械和工业工程系系主任。方黎平博士是加拿大工程院院士 (Fellow, Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE)), 加拿大工程研究院院士 (Fellow, Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC)), 加拿大机械工程学会会士 (Fellow, Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering)，加拿大安大略省注册工程师。方黎平教授于1982年7月毕业于天津大学电力及自动化系工业自动化专业，获学士学位，分别于1985年5月和1989年5月在滑铁卢大学系统设计工程系获硕士学位(MASc)和博士学位(PhD)。
